Description

To illustrate the symbiotic relationship between conservation and agriculture, VAC introduces eco-tours featuring locally grown, harvested and produced agricultural products grown in or near Hawaiʻi’s native rain forest.

Volcano Art Center (VAC) is partnering with Shaka Forest Farms (SFF), a 29 acre farm located within an ‘ōhi’a rainforest containing a wide diversity of endemic Hawaiian plants. SFF’s principal crop is māmaki (Pipturus albidus), a native stingless nettle that has many uses in native Hawaiian culture. The Monthly Eco-Tours will explore agroforestry practices, a method of regenerative agriculture modeled after natural forest systems.

Agroforestry operations are much more biologically diverse than most modern farms which grow singular plants in a monoculture arrangement. This two-hour long tour meets at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus at 10am on the first Thursday of each month. We will then caravan up to Shaka Forest Farms’ mauka parcel, located at 19-4610 Amaumau Rd, in Volcano Village.

Registration is required as participation is limited. Please call (808)967-8222 to reserve your space today.
