Description

The seminar will be held in Portuguese but all keynote speakers will make their presentation in English with subtitles in Portuguese, with the exception of professor Eduardo Brodízio which will speak in Portuguese.

Brazil is recognized for its formal environmental governance, which was built since the 1988 Constitution with the participation of civil society. However, in the last few years an agenda of deconstruction is weakening important institutional arrangements, posing new challenges to the management, conservation, and restoration of native forests. This national political scenario is, in some cases, reinforced at the state level, but social mobilization has been restricted by the COVID-19 outbreak, worsening the scenario.

It is in this context that the International Seminar – Building Dialogues on Forest Governance: Conservation, Sustainable Management, and Landscape Restoration – will be held. Initially scheduled for March 2020, the event was postponed and adapted to a web-seminar format.

The Seminar’s main objective is to discuss current forest governance trends, considering theoretical perspectives, research experiences and international, national, regional, and local practices. With this, we aim to share knowledge, reflect on gaps and opportunities, and discuss proposals capable of overcoming the challenges of implementing programs and projects for the conservation, management, and restoration of forests in Brazilian landscapes.

The Seminar is organized by the Forest Governance Research Group at the University of Sao Paulo, in partnership with PROCAM-IEE-USP, EACH-USP, the Center for the Analysis of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL, Indiana University), University of the Sunshine Coast (Australia), Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy) and Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands).
