Description

Silvopasture is a form of agroforestry that combines trees, forage, and livestock to create an integrated and intensively managed grazing system. Because silvopasture can both sequester more carbon and help pastured livestock farmers withstand severe weather, the approach will likely become increasingly utilized as farmers work to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

During this workshop, you’ll explore how Fiddle Creek Dairy—a pastured livestock farm that produces 100-percent grass-fed milk, yogurt, and cheese—has been working with Austin Unruh from Crow and Berry Land Management this past season to develop silvopasture areas within their grazing paddocks.

In addition to the environmental benefits, these tree plantings will offer more shade for the grazing herd, potentially produce more forage per acre, and eventually provide new potential products for Fiddle Creek to market. You’ll also learn how, since its beginning, Fiddle Creek has been working to diversify its dairy product line in response to the available market and demand.
