Description

The Nature Futures Framework is a flexible tool to support the development of scenarios and models of desirable futures for people, nature and Mother Earth. The framework was developed under IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) as response to limitations of existing scenario approaches in their usefulness for biodiversity and ecosystem services. It fills a gap by providing a tool for the development of nature-centric scenarios that address the diversity of human-nature relationships to inform context- and place- specific policy options based on locally held values of nature in order to achieve a good quality of life (including human well-being and living well in balance and harmony with Mother Earth).
  • Part I is on the Nature Futures Framework itself, describing the rationale for, and concepts captured in it; and
  • Part II is a methodological guidance that introduces the various methods with which the Nature Futures Framework can be used, and points to examples and additional resources for readers who wish to explore further technical details.

It has been used in local settings as well, to co-develop scenarios / future visions for a landscape with different stakeholders, such as for the Dutch Hollandse Duinen national park: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/26395916.2022.2065360

If you want to see more case-study examples or other publications about or using this tool, we made a database of publications on the Nature Futures Framework, which is updated regularly. https://www.zotero.org/groups/4937409/nature_futures_framework/library
